About Me

Welcome to Running and Rambling, where you'll find a little bit of everything related to trail running: race reports, gear reviews, photo tours, general training discussions, and occasional assorted nonsense.

My name is Donald, and I'm a recreational athlete, physical therapist, newspaper columnist, barefoot aficionado, and father of three with more than 20 years of experience in endurance sports. I studied exercise physiology at UCLA, where I was a member of the varsity rowing team, and I attended graduate school at the University of North Carolina.  For the past few years I've been heavily involved in the minimalist running movement, providing in-depth product reviews and contributing to the development process with a variety of minimalist and natural footwear companies.

I began my distance running habit in college, focusing exclusively on the marathon for several years before expanding my horizons to a variety of events including 1-mile track races, road 5K and 10Ks, trail races, ironman distance triathlons and ultramarathons.  I've been fortunate enough to compete in some of the most famous endurance events in the world, including the Boston Marathon, Pikes Peak Marathon, Wildflower Triathlon, Dipsea Race, and the Western States Endurance Run.

Our family lives in Carmel Valley, CA, which we consider one of the most beautiful locations in the world.  I'm grateful for every day that is gifted to me, and I try to savor as much of life as possible by balancing outdoor adventures with the constant joys, fears, and aspirations of being a parent.

Feedback is always welcome, so feel free to contact me anytime.  Thanks for visiting!
