All News Is Local ...
... but this is a little ridiculous:
That's the front page of today's (Sunday) Monterey Herald sports section. On a normal week, I'm tucked comfortably around page 5 or 6, somewhere between the golf roundup and the baseball box scores. But yesterday, for the first time - and for some reason that remains inexplicable - my article was on the front page, centered and above the fold.
See the guy pictured in the article below me? That would be Michael Phelps. He's a swimmer you may have heard something about.
Don't worry, I'm not letting this go to my head. I realize that this was some crazy mistake, and next week I'll be back to my regular slot behind the high school football training camp reports. But I'll always have this: from now on, I can somewhat truthfully say that for one day, I ranked just ahead of Michael Phelps.
As to the topic of the article ... it's the latest installment of my Western States Diary, resurrected from the ashes in preparation for my 100-mile race in Marin County next weekend. I'll post the article in its entirety here sometime tomorrow.

Sweet! Congrats! Best of luck in advance for the Headlands.
Very nice...trumping the Phelpster.
Nice. He gets enough coverage, nice to see you get some too. I like how your article also has your picture. One more week to go, are you ready? I'm sure you are.
Who is this Phelps guy you are refering to ????LOL!!!
Like you don't deserve to share a few column inches with Michael Phelps. It makes perfect sense to me!
Phelps is sporting some nice face hair there.
Looking forward to hearing about the 100 miler. How's the weather?
You and that Phelps fellow make a great pair.
Not only did you make the section front, but above the fold. That's rock star territory!
I clicked on the photo first and said "he's bigger than he lets on..."
Nice placement. Of course you are a more interesting read...you aren't doping!
Woohoo!! front and center!
Awesome job with the article. You've made it to the "big time" now.
Nice work on the placement. You're on top of him because he's only faster in the water - you got him on the biking and running.
How cool is that! :D
