It Was a Good Day

"Today I didn't even have to use my A.K. ...
I gotta say it was a good day."

- Ice Cube, "It Was a Good Day"

When I was a senior in high school, most of my fellow students wanted our prom theme to be "Changes" by David Bowie. Sadly, our milquetoast student council thought Bowie was too "edgy", and - to their eternal shame - they selected "The Time of My Life," keeping with the Dirty Dancing mania of the late 1980s.

It was a horrible choice. Yet they stuck to the theme, and that song was the final one our senior class heard collectively. To this day, I'm still embarrassed to say that I danced to it.

I bring this up only because it ties in nicely with the prom analogy I used in the triathlon preview. Because I literally had one of the best times ever at this race.

My finishing time was 4:51, almost nine full minutes faster than my best-case scenario from earlier in the week. I'm not sure of the numbers, but I think I was 8th in my age group, and somewhere in the 40s overall. And for the most part, I felt fantastic.

I'll post a longer report soon - either sometime Monday (possibly) or Tuesday (more likely). But if you're checking in on me, for now just know that I had the time of my life at the Kahuna prom.

But if you think I'm using an intro quote from that song, you're crazy. Ice Cube is a much cooler way to roll.

Fantastic! Look forward to the play-by-play. I thought you looked too strong on those threshold workouts not to have a great event; but it takes smarts to pull it off. Congratulations. Now, I need so advice on tapering for the Paso Robles race on the 24th. Whatever you did sure worked.

And there you go again with songs I've never heard of...

Awesome job, Donald, thanks for the preview. I saw lots of tri bikes up on top of cars on my trek up and down I-5 this weekend and wordered often how your race went. A good day, indeed!

Great job Donald, it's amazing when you better your best-case scenario, isn't it?

I promise I'll try and forget about your embarassing prom (yeah, right!).

So, is this really your last race of the year? With the great results you're getting I'd think you might try getting another one in?

Excellent work!

Great job!!! Sub-5 that's just awesome. That's pretty fast. I thought it was perfect conditions for a race. Nice and cool on the bike and the sun came out for the run.

I personally didn't have a good racing day, missed my PR goal and finished slower than last year's time but had an amazing time nevertheless. I laughed as I suffered out there. I knew coming in that there was a good chance i wasn't going to pull it off because my training only guaranteed me a finish and not a PR. Anyway I thought everyone involved was in a good and laid back mood. Good vibes all around.

I must bow down...

That is awesome- can't wait to read your race report....with that kind of speed you need to do more triathlons and go looooong!! ;-)

How is it that the dirty dancing song is kicking Ice Cube out my head for air space. Maybe it is because I watched that movie so many times. Sad to say, I know.

Oh yeah, this post is about a race and not about theme songs, I think. Sub-5 Donald? I know very little about half IM's, but I know enough to know that is fast. I look forward to the report and hope that it includes a better theme song.

Looks like your Dating Shakira training plan has paid off handsomely. I'm looking forward to reading through the details!
